Meet the Cosplayer: FriskyWalrus

Welcome to Meet the Cosplayer, where I introduce you to some of the fantastic, creative talent within the Rainbow Six: Siege community. This series is meant to showcase the amazing cosplayers no matter their skill level or experience.

I sat down and spoke with cosplayer FriskyWalrus about his history with cosplay, what got him into it, the challenges he faced and other things.

FriskyWalrus is from Atlanta, USA, and works in customer service. He has been a long-time influential person within the Siege cosplay community, as well as a founding member of the Round Table of Operators.

What got you interested in cosplay?

“Just seeing people’s amazing cosplays. I did some lower budget cosplays before I got into cosplaying Siege, and I still have some remnants of that stuff luckily.”

How long have you been cosplaying for?

“Since 2015”

What has been the most difficult part about cosplaying for you?

“Time and money. I can find something, or find someone to make it, but it costs money. I can 3D print something, or make something myself, and it costs time. It’s all about finding the perfect balance”

When cosplaying, what have been three most important things for you to have with you?

“Water, a snack (I cosplayed Tachanka once with nothing on my stomach for hours, and almost passed out, so I usually keep a protein bar around), thick oakley boot socks. They’re really cushion-y, and save my feet so much!”

When you started cosplaying, what was an obstacle or challenge that you encountered?

“Wanting to be accurate, but not having the skillset to make it. My first major cosplay was Space Dandy. I commissioned the jacket to be made, but had no clue about making things, or styling wigs. I made the necklace out of some foam, just painted some boots I found at a thrift store, and called it a day”

What advice would you give to people wanting to start cosplay for the first time?

“Have fun. Cosplay becomes too much about competition, and people forget that we’re all just nerds who like to have fun. When I started, I wanted to be the very best, most accurate I could be, to the point where I’d see someone else cosplaying Tachanka, and I’d think “oh mine is better”, but I’m glad I got past that and left that behind. Enjoy what you’re doing, never be afraid to ask questions, and just have fun!”
